Do you worry over phase issues? How bad can they be?
So many people put so many audio problems down to 'phase issues'. Are they right to worry? Are phase issues a real thing? And if phase issues are real, how do they happen? Answered in this video. Ft. Betty, Debbie & Audio Phil.

    Why would you have clicks on an LP? If you look after them. You can also get “filters” these days if you need those. Yeh you sadly need lots of dosh to get a decent sound. You can get tangently arms. I think the big issue with the groove is it struggles to recreate deep, deep base. Don’t suspend …… just going to mention my granite plinth. Yip belt drive with the motor not attached to the TT. You need a massive platter sat on an almost frictionless barring. Great presentation I will check out more of your videos.

    it all depends on the rest of your system. if you have a $250 receiver and $150 speakers, they are not going to make a difference. but with a $3500 preamp and a $5000 amplifier a $6000 speakers, yes they will. cheap interconnects are not going to cut it in this situation and you know it. come on, be realistic and say where and how they will make a difference. a blanket statement like you said is disingenuous. i have $1000 cables, but i have tried other more expensive cables that sounded dreadful in my system. finding the best ones for your system and budget is the key. so, yes i have and yes i kept them because they made my system significantly better.

    Expensive cable companies that make ultra unscientific claims that cannot be verified are close to frad. This gives high end audio a bad name. Many modestly priced products today sound very good so the factor of dimishing returns sets in very quickly. Many modestly priced audio systems can be put together that play clean, distorted audio at uncomfortable loud levels in the average room in a home. Many cost little more than a $1000 cable. Sadly, now I do not trust any audio companies claims and Independent testing and verification of those claims are usually impossible to find. Over the years I have listened to a lot of very high priced products and I have been unimpressed. A $25,000 speaker than sounds good is ... well... not very impressive. At that price it should! At $300 for a pair of powered speakers that sound very good, play loud and clear, and as it turns out, actually measure very good is very impressive. There will always be buyers with deep pockets that for a variety of reasons want to buy ultra expensive, boutique gear. There systems will sound fine. They will not want to hear the news that a system that costed 10x less sounds just as good and in some cases, better!😅

    I first noticed this problem as a teen in the '00s, downloading crappy mp3s. I'd listen to a '60s song I remembered from our local oldies station, and then click on some post-1995 song and be startled and have to turn down the volume. At some point I remember asking myself "Why is the old music so quiet?" until I realized the problem was the exact opposite. Post-1995 remasters of pre-1995 music are still the most angering becuase there is something to compare them to. The original might have more tape hiss and appear "quiet", but I'll take those imperfections any day now over clipping, surgical noise reduction, and compression, which actually does significantly alter the sound to my ears in the worst way

    The most expensive amp I had was the Marantz PM10 and i loved it. I have owned many amps in my life including Theta, Aragon, Marantz, Bryston, Hegal, and Kinki just to name a few. Currently I have Denon PMA-A110 and it's the best amp I have ever owned for my ears. Coupled with Q Acoustics Concept 500s, they sound magical.

    I’ve always said that true audiophiles are musicians or sound engineers who have learned the skill of detecting small details in the sound through practice, I’m neither of these. I’m certainly no audiophile, however I can hear differences in quality of say headphones up to a point. Very basic things like this is a bass-ey headphone, this headphone has good sound stage, this is a warm headphone. Beyond that for me at least ignorance is bliss. In the end my only real conclusion when listening to headphones is usually, I like this or I don’t like this when comparing to other models. I can’t even tell the difference between lossless and 3 bit, I’m sure some can, but I really can’t. I very recently had the opportunity to listen to some Electrostatic headphones on a very high end setup. I must say, that sounded fantastic, a totally different experience to anything I’ve heard previously. So whilst I’m no audiophile, it certainly was the best I’ve heard some of my favourite tracks.

    Like a lot of people here my hearing has diminished over the years. The problem is knowing what to listen for. Once you have trained yourself to listen you will hear things that the untrained will just miss, even someone wìth better overall hearing. Once you hear things, you can't unhear it. That can sometimes be a curse.

    we need to cause more phase issues, more comb filtering, more room reflections. Do your listening in the parking garage of a shopping center, preferably with 2 sets of stereo speakers, two in front of you, two behind you. Also put on a set of open back headphones with no time alignment. Only then will you understand the true intention of the artist. For extra grit, add a subwoofer that's ever so slightly distorting. We have fallen to perfectionism, we can no longer appreciate the beauty of what sound does

    I'm glad that you brought in the "recording" aspect of audio as it regards "audiophiles". I have been a non professional musician, as well as having professional experience in professional recording studios and home studio recording. All that with nearly 5 decades of studying audio, it's physics, as well as the various equipment used to generate sound, and capturing/recording that audio onto various recording media. The main issue I have with some "audiophiles" is that they key in to certain aspects of audio, and then often "force" themselves into thinking and believing that they hear major differences with certain pieces of tech, such as the interconnect cables you point out. Back in the late 1980s, and I still recall it, I read an article about a very pricey interconnect cable. The reviewer wrote a whole article attempting to describe what he was hearing, and why that cable was so astounding and worth the price asked for them. The cost of those "magical" cables was around ten times greater than a nicely made, quality, set of interconnect cables that actually provide as good a path for the passing of electrons as the cable that cost ten times more. The writer insisted that when he connected the uber pricey cables, "All of a sudden the sound field opened up sounding at least twice the size of space as the already great pair of interconnects I had in my system.". He continued that, "The sound field was now more three dimensional as I could hear each instrument and its precise location among the other instruments.". And not only did he make such extraordinary claims, but he also wrote that he could now hear not only the left to right orientation of the various instruments, but he could also hear where the instrument was front to back. Yes, with those magic cables, at an astounding price point, that audiophile could now hear in clear three dimensions even with his exact same audio reproduction equipment, including speakers, and that just that magic cable transformed his audio system into sounding like he was live in the space where the musicians and instruments were playing. I laughed. I had to. The claims being made, for just one expensive set of interconnect cables, were sheer hyperbole, and quite ridiculous really. There was great clarity in my mind that what that audiophile was stating was nothing more than a writer who needed and wanted to create a narrative that went beyond actually assessing and describing any possible changes in audio quality with those cables. He was writing a fictional narrative about something that was real, an expensive set of interconnect cables. After all, this article was for a magazine for audiophiles, and as such those readers expect a certain style and description of even the more mundane items in their audio systems, because they want to read that their opinions, beliefs, and what they claim to hear and not hear, are not imagined, but verified by others. Those audiophile writers give those readers what they want and what they need. I stopped reading audiophile magazines, and greatly preferred and prefer to read articles about recording techniques, equipment, as well as the actual science behind it all. I've encountered too many self proclaimed audiophiles who ramble on and on about the sound fields they hear, and the three dimensional audio they hear, and how their preferred equipment truly and really, "Reproduces" what the recording "should" sound like. However, when asked if they have actually been in recording studios to see and hear how audio is recorded, the majority of audiophiles do not have such experience. I ask if they have direct experience with hearing what a Les Paul guitar sounds like when played through a full Marshall amplified "stack", compared to the same guitar played through a small Fender Princeton amplifier, the answers are, "No.". Have you heard, live, a Ludwig 5 piece drum kit? Have you heard what a tightly tuned snare sounds like in bar room, compared to a looser sounding snare? The answers are "No.". Therein is the problem with self ascribed "audiophiles". They make declarative statements about how certain speakers make certain recordings sound "exactly" like the recording, yet have no actual reference by which to make such a claim. The recording you used in this video demonstrates what audiophiles will spend hours discussing and debating. That's fine if one has nothing else to do and wants to wax speculative. For me, I like to take in the art of the musicians and their music as primary and most important to me. As for the recording and playback, I reserve those discussions with other musicians and recording professionals where we discuss that qualities of instruments, amplifiers, speakers, strings, microphones, etc. And those conversations are much shorter than when audiophiles spend over an hour discussing what a uber expensive interconnect cable will do their audio system's quality. Great for them I say. For me, I don't have the inclination to spend that much time and effort on such things.

    UA-cam should definitely notify the audience where products have been received for free by the reviewer AND where there is NO expectation that the item will be returned after being reviewed. This is just basic transparency. Frankly, I didn't know this was a thing for fairly expensive tech and HiFi products - I thought review samples were sent out by the distributor / manufacturer and that they EXPECTED the item to be returned fairly promptly once the review was complete. If the item is very low value and the cost of shipping is almost as much as the item value, then I wouldn't object for the reviewer to keep / discard or give away (but not sell) the item. Anybody who works for a company is OBLIGATED to declare any "benefits in kind" (bottles of wine, meals, theatre tickets, go-karting etc.) when this has been provided for free by a supplier or would-be supplier - I don't see why the rules should be any different for UA-cam content creators.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Well said! and thank you very much for saying it. I have been working in the music industry as an audio engineer for more than 45 years. We definitely use the best speakers we can afford to work with inside the studio. The purpose of this is to be able to hear the details clearly that we need to fix or adjust, so that the sound can sound with a more or less standard quality, on the greatest number of types of equipment on which the music will be played, for more or less have a fairly similar result in each medium. However, when we mix music we use all types of speakers that represent the normal inexpensive equipment that consumers use in their homes, their cars, and even the cheap headphones they use with their phones. So no matter what audiophiles do to hear better, absolutely everything they hear is sound that has been equated, compressed, expanded, processed, resampled, etc. . . Even microphones add color to the sound! We even use that coloration to get the texture we want, that we need, or that the producer wants to have in their final mixes! To be honest; A good pair of speakers under $500.00 will do the job just fine. And that's if you have the money. In reality you will hear all the details in 90% of the music equipment that exists. And just like you saw here, check your hearing. It will work if you have a good response from your ears. The experience of listening to music is not based on response graphs that you don't understand but you talk about them! The experience of enjoying a good music program is completely subjective and is compromised with the quality of your hearing. Don't buy into the stupidity that the "audiophilia" industry sells to people. That's all just marketing rubbish to steal your money. Most of these devices are designed to look crazy or pretty in a decorated room! That's all. Don't be stupid, don't waste your money on useless garbage that looks weird. You won't impress anyone who knows how the "cookie crumbles". It will make you look like an actual imbecile. If you want to spend money just send me the check.

    Remember cassette tapes? 3.0% third harmonic distortion was considered acceptable. That is -30.5 dB. Yet I remember saying "the harmonic distortion on this tape is unbearable" exactly no one, ever. Nowadays, an audio device with SINAD of 100 dB is considered below par. I guess because it cannot transparently capture the 120+ dB dynamic range so commonly available in "high-res" content...

      I remember reel-to-reel. 1% distortion up to 3% or more on peaks, depending on how far you wanted to push it. Maybe Aiyima, Fosi, Arylic etc will produce a cute little tape recorder for people to get that sound at home. If they want it.

      So yes a simple cheap bluetooth spaker can produce a specific note the same like a more expensive speakers and there will be no difference, but it will never be able to produce the same soundstage and depth like a.more expensive system.

      @MAW-uy3rv День тому

      I did a lot of listening sessions in good acoustic rooms with plenty enough different speakers and there's a huge difference between them in how authentic they produce a recording of a song. The recording may look like the artists are playing live in front of you and it feels like they are standing in your living room. With my eyes closed I can point out every single instrument and there's space between them and are inside your living room instead of staying inside the speakers cabinet. It's like the curtain gets pulled off the speaker and comes alive right in front of you.

    • @MAW-uy3rv

      But everything falls and stands with how good a recording is being done. When I was younger I did bought a dvd of live concerts when I bought my first good Soundsystem. In that years I started to appreciate how good a live performance was recorded on dvd's or cd's and was addicted to listening all songs again that I grew up with.

Even you question everything at the end of the video you made. Not everyone can afford expensive stuff, but they maybe happy with what they have. This stupid video, is a perfect way to crush and dampening peoples love of music and what they listen to it on. I have a great sound system and I could hear it just about. Wonderful topic. It turns out I have been doing a lot of thinking about this very topic over the last few days. I am planning for some new components, a couple of monoblock amps. In the new configuration, I will be using my DAC as the pre-amp, using both balanced and single ended outputs simultaneously, both are volume controlled. The balanced will feed the monoblocks, SE to the subwofders. With te balanced outputs being a differential differential signal, how will the phase align with the single ended? Will they be in phase, 180 out of phase, 90 degrees out of phase or something else? I have been ruminating over this for a week or two.

    • @AudioMasterclass
      @AudioMasterclass 2 дні тому

      Tricky one, but I suspect it will be down to the design. It isn't unknown for different types of outputs to be inverted with respect to each other. It will either work or it won't, but if it doesn't then swapping the signal conductors of the balanced outputs inside one of the connectors will fix it. Free advance comes without guarantee.

    With all the tools available now for recording i find that many "pop" recordings just don't sound very good. I listen to these recordings because the music is still wonderful. All the processing and especially the compression used, can degrade the listening experience. The so-called "audiophile " recordings often sound better because the sound engineers at every step in the process were meticulous in their attention to detail regardless of the bits used. A strong esthetic sense by the engineers in tune with what the artists had in mind makes for great listening experiences. Great recordings sound just fine on today's modest audio products. They can sound very fine on every level of gear .. provided the listening space is reasonable good. Bad recordings sound bad on every system and worse on systems with better resolution. The esthetic sense of the recording engineers sensitive to what the artists were trying to communicate can't be measured. Yet, when great musicians and great recording engineers work together the results can truly be magical. I am very happy when the tools available for recording are improved but in the end, the human beings producing the music is the most critical factor.

    • @AudioMasterclass
      @AudioMasterclass 2 дні тому

      I would argue that in the 'olden days' the cream of every musical and audio profession rose to the top, congregated in the best recording studios, and learned from each other. Now everyone has their own home studio and top producers work in a fancy shed in their garden, thus isolating themselves from useful outside influences. Of course this is simplifying, but I suspect that it has been good for neither music nor recorded sound.

For me I have an extensive collection of LPs, CDs and cassettes. My first album purchase was Meet the Beatles. Even if handled with care the only format I find least viable with time is the cassette. All of these formats offer quality reproduction. As far as the best I would put the cd slightly ahead of streaming, at least to my ancient ears. And the one thing the cd offers above streaming is that it will always be readily available. I do stream using the Cambridge CXN100 and appreciate the access to a library of material no one person would be able to own. But I do prefer physically owning my music. It’s a ‘tag’ word, raise your hand if you don’t like it. Why don’t they just ask. Honestly it is not voodoo and it is not good/bad either. Phase ‘issue’ is what gives us equalization, rather than the other way round. It gives us directional cues that make stereophonic sound so much phun.
